Demystifying the Pop-up Book in Philadelphia
Session 1: June 29-July 3, 2026
Session 2: September 14-18, 2026
I have been conducting workshops on the art of pop-up book making for over 20 years. In these workshops, I not only teach the technical skills needed to create intricate three-dimensional stories, but I also share the creative inspiration that has fueled my own artistic journey.
Since now I have a dog—Nori (hypoallergenic… more or less 😄)—I’ve been traveling less these days. So for the first time, I’ll be hosting a 5-day intensive pop-up workshop in my newly renovated Philadelphia studio. As this is my first workshop here, I’m keeping it small 4 (minimum to run) to 8 students. This space has truly been a labor of love, and I’m excited to finally open it up and share it with you. It’s also the first time I can show my large-scale works here—Noodle Mountain and A Day in the Terraced Rice Fields.
During the workshop, you’ll have access to my tools, printers, books, and materials. I’m really looking forward to spending the week making and problem-solving together.
You can read more below, and feel free to reach out with any questions—email me at fusansan@gmail.com, send me a DM, or comment below.

Demystifying the Pop-up Book in Philadelphia
Session 1 June 29–July 3, 2026 · 9am–4pm
Session 2 September 14–18, 2026 · 9am–4pm
$1400 (materials included)
Movable books began as a way to explain big ideas—astronomy, fortune-telling, navigation, anatomy, and other principles. Today, they’re often seen as children’s books, but the structures themselves are incredibly versatile—they can become anything from simple cards to animations to kinetic sculpture.
In this workshop, we’ll start with the basics and build up together. You’ll learn foundational pop-up mechanisms, then move into more complex structures like platforms, rotating discs, and pull-tabs. We’ll look at how commercial pop-ups are made, flip through lots of examples, and talk about how these structures can be adapted in different ways.
I’ll also share how I work from a digital image—using software, scanners, printers, and plotters—to bring photographs into dimensional form.
Most importantly, this is a space for you to experiment and develop your own ideas. My goal is that you leave not just with new techniques, but with something that feels like yours.
Open to all levels.
If the organizer cancels the workshop due to low enrollment (a minimum of four participants) or unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be issued.
Participant cancellations made two months in advance for the June workshop will receive a full refund. Participants who cancel three months before the September workshop will receive a full refund. Cancellations more than one month before the start date are eligible for a 50% refund—no refunds within two weeks of the start date. A full refund will be provided if the participant’s spot is filled by another registrant. I am reasonable, so email me if you have any concerns!
